The town of S. Elpidio a Mare
In the heart of the Marche, only a few kilometres from the Adriatic coast, lies Sant'Elpidio a Mare, one of the most interesting towns in the region, not just for its monumental and artistic treasures, but also for its annual historical commemorations, “Città del Medioevo” (Medieval Town) in the third week of July and “La Contesa del Secchio” (“the Bucket Contest”) in the second week of August, during which the town relives the glories of the past, meticulously recreating a medieval atmosphere with scenes and aspects of daily life, and very striking events and shows.
The most important resource of Sant'Elpidio a Mare, however, is the footwear industry, which, thanks to the high quality of the products made by the many handicraft and industrial enterprises, is the driving force of local economy.
The idea of making the most of this enormous industrial heritage, and thus to conserve a fundamental element of its history, has found appropriate expression in the establishment of the Footwear Museum.
